“When one shows someone the king in chess and says: “This is the king”, this does not tell him the use of this piece—unless he already knows the rules of the game up to this last point: the shape of the king. You could imagine his having learnt the rules of the game without ever having been shown an actual piece. The shape of the chessman corresponds here to the sound or shape of a word.”

The Adventures of Vonard the Dwarf Druid Continue…

We were taken to the leader of the new mercenary group, which happened to be on a disguised pirate ship.  The leader gave us a test to see whether we were worthy of joining his crew.  Our mission was to raid a completely random ship, which just turned out to  be a group of heavily armed pirates and Red Moon Mercenaries (sarcasm was used there).  We handily defeated the pirates, impressing the leader of the new mercenaries.  Unfortunately, no matter how nicely we asked him he didn’t know any critical plot details, so we had to ask him if he had any other quests for us.  He asked us to investigate the disappearance of his people in another country, and we were teleported to a safe house in the middle of the swamp where they disappeared (I guess it wasn’t that safe of a house).  In the swamp, we found some of the disappeared people, and some red moon corpses.  Then we were promptly attacked by a fire breathing hydra and a black pudding.  In the battle, I took mainly the role of healer, especially since the black pudding was trying to eat my megaraptor.  I also called down lightning and earth elementals from the sky to aid in the fight (differing from my normal role as tanky giant animal, though now I have natural spell so i can do both at the same time).  After we defeated the monsters and were setting up camp, I explored the pond and found a mysterious tunnel underneath that we decided to explore the next day.

Since the megaraptor was badly hurt, couldn’t fit through the tunnel, and our bard was called away to the bard’s college, I sent the megaraptor (who I shall hence call olaph because I just remembered that was his name) away to get some proper healing rather than my field medicine techniques.  I used to control water to get my party into the tunnel, where we heard some whispers indicating it was occupied.  Unfortunately, a group of armored adventurers isn’t exactly quiet, so we ended up in a fight with a bunch of red shirts.  Thensomethingstarted attacking them from behind, and I decided to be diplomatic.  By making friends with the red shirts, we saved some of them and managed to fight off a pair of evil possessed elf thingies(a technical term), and we learned that the wizard Peter(who had run away under mysterious circumstances and whom we were looking for) was conducting experiments in the facility.  We went into a main room, which was a platform suspended over lava, where we saw a portal thingie.

Then Peter showed up and I tried to get diplomatic.  As we talked, we learned that the portal led to the plane controlled by our rings, and that Peter was working towards a better world (enter all the cliche` villain encounter lines), and basically gave us the join or die speech.  Also, the gate was attracting extraplanar entities interested in controlling its power so he had rigged an earthquake to destroy the portal.  I had just managed to convince him that we could destroy the portal together and talk about things more outside when a pair of giant bug demons showed up.  Peter walled us in with the demons and I yelled at him for doing so.  The rest of my party managed to dimension door out of the platform, leaving me(a giant stone bear) facing now three demons as a hellfire golem appeared out of nowhere (thanks guys).  Now, I’m no coward, so I used my ring to Fus Ro DAH! on of the bug demons.  It flew back 20 feet, which should have knocked it into the lava(hooray!), but it managed to cling on with one claw(sad, I suspected DM trickery).  They then proceeded to ignore me because I couldn’t speak their language and started fighting each other.  In the confusion, I managed to rush through the portal and become attuned to my ring of super power.  I tried to send a disintegrating ray through the portal, but it didn’t work.  I was soon joined by my compatriots (Peter had frozen over the tunnel and the portal was the only way out) who had broken through the force wall and I created another portal near my home cave that we escaped through.

And that is the story so far.  More to come in the next few weeks.

April292012

So this weekend I climbed on things.

The first thing was a water tower on the top of a hill.  I didn’t let the fact that part of the ladder was blocked off from the bottom deter me at all, and I was able to get in the main shaft.  Then I was asked to come down :(.

The next thing I climbed to the top of was a hunter’s blind.  I found it on an island in the river we were canoeing along, a mighty structure of wood and pine branch camouflage.  I had to wade a bit to get there, but it was totally worth it as I got to see a mighty bald eagle fly quite close to me.

The last thing I climbed was a wooden rock climbing wall with those brightly colored foot/handholds.  I’ve always been able to scamper up that kind of thing, and it’s always fun.  The only slight problem was that on the last hurdle, the last handhold was about 2 inches out of comfortable reach, so I had to do a one handed pullup over a lip to get to the top.

And those are the things that I have climbed this weekend.  Also, my flip phone decided that it was done being a flip phone.  When I flipped it open, the screen seceded from the rest of the phone.

You’ve got to be kidding me. The first couple things that jumped out at me were the single, “Tea Partyist” senator who submitted this and the language that requires officials of the (newly seceded, mind you) state to use “original intent” analysis of the US Constitution. How do you…even…a;ldkjfa;lkjdad;lfj

This is why I didn’t want to elect Tea Partiers. This is why.

U Mad Bro?
